Following the Civil War, Federal Comissioner Shattuck has organized a gang to help him ride roughshod over the Texans. They rob a U. S. Army payroll wagon, kill the cavalry escort, make off with the $100,000 payroll, and frame Lieutenant Ross Kincaid for the crime. The latter is jailed in San Antion pending court martial. In Mustang, Texas, rancher Clint Wheeler leads a band who rob stagecoaches and distribute the money to local ranchers so they can pay the outrageous taxes Shattuck levys and hold onto their property until honest law-and-order comes. With the aid of "Happy" Daniels, Ross escapes jail and, assuming that Wheeler and his men are responsible for his plight, heads for Mustangs Wells, where he soon finds himself between the two factions.

Gene Autry is back near the saddle, trying to help out a crippled jockey. Gene is certain that the jockey can ride in the Big Race if the lad can regain his self-confidence. Meanwhile, Gene and comical sidekick Sterling Holloway have another problem on their hands: A rogue stallion has "kidnapped" Gene's prize mare. Piloting a plane, Autry seeks out and locates the stallion.

Posing as unemployed musicians, Roy Acuff and his Smoky Mountain Boys, are being helped by Ted Gibson owner of the Harmony Inn in San Antonio, Texas. Gibson is impoverished because he keeps buying his kleptomaniac Uncle Zeke out of trouble, supports his Ma, and Grandpa. He wants to marry Jean Wallace, and doesn't know that Acuff and his musicians are traveling incognito for the radio show "Who Am I Helping?" If he guesses their identity, he wins $100,000.

While escorting an elderly man to an undisclosed location, The Driver is confronted by a van full of armed men and is warned that the old man has stolen a large amount of diamonds. The old man claims to have swallowed the diamonds and that the men will likely cut him open to retrieve them. The Driver decides at the last minute to help him, participating in a car chase and shootout with the van. The Driver eventually evades his pursuers and watches their destruction. He then delivers the old man to a town nearby and asks the merchant if he did indeed swallowed the diamonds. The client merely chuckles and walks away. The Driver then leaves.

Four bandits swoop down on a California bank and flee with $98,000, leaving a truck as the only clue to their identity. Jane Hartman, bank secretary, recognizes the truck as one on which her brother Charles worked.
